Why use an offline word counter?
Most word counters on the web are hosted tools. They run in the cloud, they need
a live connection to work, and any text you paste in is technically sent to a
server. That's fine for public copy or a quick tweet. It's a problem when:
- You're writing on a plane, train, or bus with no Wi-Fi
- You're working in a café or co-working space with unreliable internet
- You're editing an unpublished article, legal document, or private note
- You're on a shared or public computer and don't want your text to leave the browser
- You're in a restricted network (some schools, offices, or countries block external services)
- You want a tool that keeps working even if the site's servers go down
An offline-capable word counter solves all of these. Once the page has loaded
once, everything happens locally on your device. If your connection drops
mid-sentence, nothing changes — the count keeps updating in real time.
How the offline word counter works
Your Online Helper uses a browser feature called a Progressive Web App
(PWA). When you first visit the site, your browser caches the word
counter's files locally. On every subsequent visit — even with no internet — the
browser serves those cached files instantly. The counting logic runs in
JavaScript, entirely on your device.
There's no server round-trip and no cloud processing. That's why the tool feels
instant: the numbers you see are coming straight from your machine.
What it counts
The word counter tracks several metrics in real time as you type or paste text:
- Words — split on whitespace, the same way most editors count them
- Characters — including spaces and punctuation
- Characters without spaces — useful for character limits that ignore whitespace
- Sentences — split on periods, question marks, and exclamation points
- Paragraphs — blocks of text separated by blank lines
- Lines — every line break, including within paragraphs
- Average word length — a rough measure of reading difficulty
- Reading time — estimated at 200 words per minute
- Speaking time — estimated at 130 words per minute
Everything updates as you type, so you can watch a target hit live. If you're
writing to a word count — say, 500 words for a school essay or 280 characters
for a tweet — you get instant feedback without pressing a "count" button.
How to use it offline
There are two ways to make sure the word counter is available when you're not
connected:
Option 1: Visit once, then use offline
Just open the word counter while you have internet. Your browser automatically
caches the page. From that point on, you can open the same URL even without a
connection, and it will load from the cache. This works in any modern browser —
Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge.
Option 2: Install as an app
For a more permanent setup, install Your Online Helper as an app:
- Open the site in your browser
- Look for "Install" in the address bar (desktop) or "Add to Home Screen" in the share menu (mobile)
- Confirm the install
Once installed, Your Online Helper opens in its own window — no browser chrome,
no address bar — and works fully offline. The word counter will be available
from the home screen any time, whether you're connected or not.
Is it private?
Yes. Every character you type stays on your device. The word counter doesn't
send your text anywhere — not to a server, not to analytics, not to anyone. You
can verify this yourself by disconnecting from the internet and watching the
count keep updating. If the text were going anywhere, the tool would stop working
the moment you went offline. It doesn't.
This makes the counter safe for unpublished drafts, private journals, client
documents, medical notes, or anything else you wouldn't paste into an arbitrary
website.
Frequently asked questions
Does the word counter work without internet?
Yes. The counter runs entirely in your browser. Once the page has loaded
once, it works offline — on a plane, in a café with no Wi-Fi, or anywhere
without a connection. The word count updates in real time as you type,
entirely on your device.
Is my text sent to a server?
No. All counting happens locally in your browser. Your text never leaves
your device and is never sent to any server. This makes the tool safe for
private documents, unpublished writing, and anything sensitive.
Can I install the word counter as an app?
Yes. Your Online Helper can be installed as a Progressive Web App (PWA).
Look for "Add to Home Screen" or "Install" in your browser's menu. Once
installed, the word counter opens in its own window and works fully
offline, just like a native app.
What does the word counter measure?
The counter shows words, total characters, characters without spaces,
sentences, paragraphs, lines, average word length, and estimated reading
and speaking times. Everything updates live as you type.
Why would I need an offline word counter?
Common situations include writing on a plane or train with no Wi-Fi,
working on a laptop in a café with spotty internet, editing sensitive
documents you don't want sent to a web server, using a shared computer
without reliable connectivity, or working in locations with slow or
restricted internet access.
