Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common questions about Your Online Helper.
What is Your Online Helper?

Your Online Helper is a growing collection of free, browser-based tools — a website status checker (SitePulse), a mortgage calculator, a unit converter (Conversion), a color picker, a lottery number picker, a password generator, a QR code generator, a word counter, and an encoder/decoder. Everything runs directly in your browser; nothing is uploaded to a server unless a specific tool says otherwise.

Do I need an account to use the tools?

No. There are no accounts, no logins, and no sign-up forms. Open a tool and start using it. Any settings or history a tool keeps are stored in your browser's localStorage and never leave your device.

Can I install Your Online Helper as an app?

Yes. Your Online Helper is a Progressive Web App (PWA), which means you can install it on your phone or desktop and use it like a native app. Look for "Add to Home Screen" or "Install" in your browser's menu (usually under the share or ⋮ button). Once installed, it opens in its own window and works offline.

How does the homepage search work?

Just start typing in the search box at the top of the home page. The tiles filter instantly to match by tool name, keywords, or description. Click the ✕ to clear, or press Escape on your keyboard.

What are the favorites?

Every tool tile has a small star icon in the corner. Click it to pin a tool to the "Favorites" section that appears at the top of the home page. Your favorites are stored in your browser and only on your device.

Why does a website show as "down" in SitePulse when it opens fine in my browser?

Browsers block many cross-origin requests for security reasons, and some sites (Cloudflare-protected pages, for example) reject automated checks even when they're perfectly reachable for a human. SitePulse works around this by falling back to public CORS proxies, but a small number of sites will still refuse every route.

If a site loads fine for you but SitePulse reports it down, treat the tool's result as inconclusive rather than definitive.

How accurate is the response time in SitePulse?

Response times reflect the full round-trip from your browser to the check endpoint. When a direct check is blocked and the tool falls back to a proxy, the number includes the extra hop through that proxy — so proxy-based results will read higher than a direct ping would.

Are the mortgage calculations financial advice?

No. The mortgage calculator is an educational estimate. Real loan terms depend on your lender, credit profile, taxes, insurance, PMI, and many other factors. Always confirm numbers with a licensed loan officer before making decisions.

Can the Lottery Picker improve my odds of winning?

No. Every combination of numbers has exactly the same probability of being drawn. The Lottery Picker is a random number generator provided purely for entertainment. It does not purchase tickets, enter you in any draw, or in any way increase your chance of winning a prize. Please play responsibly — see the Legal page for more information and problem-gambling resources.

Are the passwords from the Password Generator safe to use?

Yes. Passwords are generated locally in your browser using crypto.getRandomValues() — the same cryptographically secure source browsers use for security-sensitive values. Nothing is sent to any server.

One important note: the generator saves your last 15 passwords to your browser's local storage so you can copy them again if you need to. On a shared or public computer, clear the history (or your browser data) before you leave.

Do the QR codes expire?

No. The QR codes are generated entirely in your browser as images — they aren't hosted anywhere. A downloaded QR code will keep working indefinitely as long as the destination URL or content it encodes is still valid. If you encoded a URL that later changes, the QR code will point to the old address.

What's the difference between decimal and binary data units in Conversion?

Decimal units (KB, MB, GB, TB) are based on powers of 1000 — so 1 GB = 1000 MB. Binary units (KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB) are based on powers of 1024 — so 1 GiB = 1024 MiB. Both are shown side by side in the Data category so you can convert between the two systems. Operating systems and drive manufacturers often disagree on which to use, which is why a "500 GB" drive shows up as ~465 GiB in some tools.

Does the Color Picker work on my phone?

Yes. Every tool is built to work on mobile and desktop, with proper viewport handling, safe-area support for notched devices, and touch-friendly tap targets. On phones the layout stacks vertically for easier use.

Where is my data stored?

Everything stays on your device. Check history, color history, lottery draws, password history, and preferences are all saved via your browser's local storage. Clearing your browser data will erase them. No analytics, no tracking, no accounts. See the Legal page for a full list of what each tool stores, or the Privacy at a glance page for the short version.

What is the banner about books at the bottom of the home page?

That's a recommendation for Little Ink Pot, a curated site for discovering your next read. The banner rotates through a few short messages automatically — hover over it on desktop to pause the rotation, or tap any of the small dots below to jump between messages. Clicking anywhere on the banner opens the site in a new tab.

Is there an API?

Not currently. Your Online Helper is a client-only project. If you need programmatic access to a specific function (like website monitoring or password generation), you'd be better served by a dedicated service designed for that purpose.

I found a bug — how do I report it?

Since this is a static project, the best route is to note the tool name, what you did, what you expected, and what happened. Use the Contact page to send the details, or if you're hosting it yourself, open an issue on your repo.

Still stuck? Many answers live in the Guides page, where each tool has a short walkthrough. Start there before digging deeper.
